Central vs. allied powers
At the beginning of the war there were two sides. The Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance. The Triple Entente was formed by Great Britain, France, and Russia, who helped the Slavs escape the power of the Austrian-Hungarians. On the other side was the Triple Alliance, which included, Austria-Hungary, Germany and Italy.
Later on in the war, alliances changed. The Central Powers was created, mostly of the Triple Alliance. Austria-Hungary and Germany stayed allies throughout the war and were known as the Central Powers. Bulgaria and the Ottoman empire soon joined the Central Powers.
Great Britain, Russia and France fought against the Central Powers, as the Allied Powers, more commonly known as the Allies. Although Italy once fought against the Allies, they joined, leaving the Triple Alliance. In the end, 30 nations fought in this war.
