U-Boats
U-Boats- (German) Submarines were the worlds largest and most advanced war machines, causing heavy losses of Allied shipping.
This is an abbreviation of the term Unterseeboot, meaning undersea boat. The first U-Boat was named the
U-1 in 1905. Germany was the first country to build and use submarines in war. World War 1 was the first war using U-Boats. The Allied forces came up with other, anti-submarine, tactics for war.
Germans would sink British cargo ships carrying grain, beef, and lamb. At first the germans would allow the passengers leave the ships before shooting them. After the british ships began to position hidden guns and shoot at the U-Boats, the germans decided to use a "sink on sight" basis. this was accomplished by shooting torpedoes towards them from underwater.
